LISTENING EXAMINATION

The listening exams are held in the accredited language labs of the Language Testing Centre. Examinees listen to the exam tasks through headphones. Each text can be listened to twice in succession. The texts focus on everyday life or life in the military.

Tasks of the listening examination:

Task 1: multiple choice test

The examinee listens to 15 questions related to everyday life. In the test booklet for each question there is a three-option (a, b, c) multiple choice answer. The examinee is to choose the right option.
This task tests whether the examinee can understand simple questions in everyday communication and find the right answer to them.

Task 2: selecting statements

The examinee listens to 10 statements which focus on life in the military. In the test booklet for each statement 3 sentences/reactions (a, b and c variants) are provided. The examinee’s task is to choose the best sentence/reaction.
This task tests whether the examinee can understand simple statements (dates, NATO alphabet, etc.) related to life in the military.

Task 3: completing statements

The examinee listens to a text (consisting of 10-15 sentences) about certain aspects of military life. In the test booklet there are 5 incomplete statements that are related to the text. The examinee is to complete the statements with the missing information. The number of the words to complete the statements is maximum 3 per item.
This task is to test whether the examinee can filter out information from a short coherent text related to a certain part of military life.

SPEAKING EXAMINATION

At the beginning of the exam the examiner informs the candidate about the exam procedure. Then the candidate chooses 2 pictures (related to military life) and 1 roleplay card (related to an everyday situation). The candidate looks at the pictures and selects the one he/she is going to speak about and hands it over along with the roleplay card to the examiner. The exam starts with a short warm-up and continues with the following tasks:

Tasks of the speaking examination:

Task 1: general conversation (2-3 min.)

The examiner and the candidate talk about general topics (e.g. shopping, health, food, etc.)
This task tests whether the examinee can talk about everyday topics using the required vocabulary and grammar at the appropriate level.

Task 2: military conversation (2-3 min.)

The examiner initiates a conversation about a military topic. This task is to test whether the examinee can speak about his/her assignment, service, branch and daily responsibilities, etc. using the required vocabulary and grammar at the appropriate level.

Task 3: picture description (2-3 min.)

First the examinee describes the scene (e.g. a military base, an exercise, etc.) in the picture chosen by him/her at the beginning of the exam, then the examiner asks him/her some questions related to the picture.
This task tests whether the examinee can speak fluently and clearly about certain aspects of military life and react to the questions that arise during the conversation.

Task 4: roleplay (1-2 min.)

The examinee and the candidate act out a situation about an everyday topic.

READING EXAMINATION

Duration:                        80 min.

Passing score:                 21 points

Candidates are not allowed to use dictionaries in the reading exam.

Tasks of the reading examination:

Task 1: gap fill task

There is a general text (700-800 characters) with 10 words missing. Each of the missing words is related to a certain grammatical phenomenon. The candidate is to choose the right word for each gap from 3 options (A, B or C) given in the exam booklet.
This task tests mainly grammatical knowledge in context, and whether the candidate has acquired the grammatical proficiency of the tested level.

Task 2: multiple choice test

After reading a general text containing 900-1000 characters, the examinee is to answer 5 questions. For each question there is a three-option (A, B or C) multiple choice answer. The examinee is to select the correct answer.
The task tests whether the examinee can understand a simple, general text and find special information in it.

maximum score: 5 points

Task 3: answering questions

The examinee reads a military text containing 1200-1300 characters. There are 5 questions related to the text. The examinee’s task is to answer these questions.
The task tests whether the examinee can understand a military text and find special information in it.

maximum score: 10 points

Task 4: completing statements

The examinee reads a military text containing 1000-1100 characters and completes 10 gapped statements related to the text in the exam booklet.
The task tests whether the examinee can understand a military text and find special information in it.

WRITING EXAMINATION

Passing score:                 27 points

Candidates are not allowed to use dictionaries in the writing exam.

Tasks of the writing examination:

Task 1: guided composition about a general topic

The examinee is to write a composition of 120 words about a general topic on the basis of 3-4 prompts.
This task tests whether the examinee can write about a general topic using the required vocabulary, grammar and cohesive devices at the appropriate level.

maximum score: 20 points

Task 2: letter writing about a military topic

The examinee is to write a text of 120 words about a military topic on the basis of 3-4 prompts.
This task tests whether the examinee can write a letter about a simple military topic using the required vocabulary, grammar and cohesive devices at the appropriate level.

maximum score: 25 points
